MAY 2008lLast week I was interviewed by Pierre Alexandre de Looz of Artinfo at the NY ICFF. The interview is now online! Here's a taste of de Looz's take on the tiles:
Canadian architect and [Assistant] Professor Stephanie Davidson has created a series of organically formed ceramic tiles, slated for production by corunum. While satisfyingly sculptural, they are really designed for extra comfort and massage-induced relaxation befitting a spa...Davidson wants to guide the user to an interactive experience with the tiles. "We had the lumbar ones installed, and they are really comfortable, because the concave part of the back can't reach flat surfaces unless you bend over. This is a subtle way of just leaning back and not making a spectacle of yourself to get that part of your back reached and rubbed." Read the full article on Artinfo.

FEBRUARY 2007TOUCHY-FEELY has been working at the ALFA ARTE factory in Eibar Spain, continuing to test materials and production processes for URBAN CUSHIONS public furniture. Resources were chosen based on what was available and in use in the factory. As a kind of experimentation theif, TOUCHY-FEELY took materials out of their lines of production, and applied them in different ways. Using conventional materials in unconventional ways meant the results were difficult to predict. The material tests, successes and failures, will be exhibited in March.
URBAN CUSHIONS is part of a Disonancias Art for Innovation initiative to facilitate international artists collaborating with established industries in the Basque region of Spain.
